Personal Record

Carl Ludwig Sipress

Was 70 years.

Born:1834-09-05 Germany
Dead:1905-05-20 South Bend, St Joseph, Indiana 1)
Buried:Bowman cemetery, South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana

Family with Wilhelmina Podrowski (1836 - 1901)

Marriage:1855 Germany 2)

Louise Sipress (1868 - 1925)

Surname was spelled ZIPRSZ in 1882 naturalization document. (Perhaps pronounced as starting with a "C" based on the misspelling on Louise's marriage certificate. "sz" in Polish may well have an "sh" sound)
His will was made out as "Carl Ludwig Zipress" but, he did not sign it - " HIS MARK" is noted by his name. If he was illiterate, and not fluent in English, the family name spelling "ZIPRSZ" may have been an Immigration Agent's guess based on Carl's pronunciation.

Death Certificate says born September 5, 1834.
1900 Census says born in September, 1831.
Naturalization records show that on 2MAY1882 he was 47 so he was born in 1834 - probably correct.
1900 Census shows "Ludwig Sipress"
LDS film 1673050 (item 15) South Bend 1897 Census shows Charles Sipress resident at 406 E. Sample. 3 male, 1 female for a total of 4 in the house. This would have been: himself, wife Wilhelmina ("Minnie"), Herman and, probably, FRED. Their daughter, Augusta, moved back in with her daughter, Ethel Culver before the 1900 Census, making up the 2 males and 3 females in the house in June 1900. Fred must have moved out to California in those 3 years.

Per Death Certificate: A. Patterson Funeral Home. Burial at Bowman cemetery.

1882 Naturalization Declaration form shows that they arrived in New York 1 OCT1880 on a ship from Antwerp. The LDS Film, #295795: "Passenger Lists New York 27SEP1880-28OCT1880", shows that Carl Zipress arrived in New York from Liverpool October 2, 1880 on the White Star Lines' "Republic" wi th Wilhelmina, Louise, Fred, Augusta and Herman and lists his occupati on as "Farmer".

G-Grandson, Russell KEITH Sipress, commented at the Sipress Reunion (Beth Ann Robinson's house - Elkhart, IN, July 9, 1999):
1) Carl Ludwig had a brother who settled around Berrien Springs, MI.
2) They brought Rhubarb roots with them which were passed on in the family.
